media and entertainment groups. Broadcasting and TV are its core

technical service and R&D, and investment.
SMG operates 13 analog TV channels (7 cable channels
covering Shanghai area, 4 wireless for Shanghai and neighboring
areas, and 2 satellite channels for domestic and overseas subscribers),
11 analog radios, 31 pay digital TV channels, 1 broadband online
TV, 4 newspapers and magazines, and 3 sports clubs. SMG is also
the majority shareholder of the listed Oriental Pearl Co Ltd.
SMG’s prime-time TV and radio penetration rates
top 70 and 90 percent, respectively, in Shanghai. (Nielsen 2004).
Ad sales grow at an annual 10 percent. Its 2005 ad income has reached
2.5 billion yuan.
SMG was founded in 2001 after merging Radio Shanghai,
Eastern Radio Shanghai, Shanghai Television, Oriental Television
Station and Shanghai Cable Television. A subsidiary of Shanghai
Media & Entertainment Group, SMG has 10.7 billion yuan in fixed
assets and more than 2,400 employees. It broadcasts 252 hours of
TV and 234 hours of radio on a daily basis.
SMG produces TV and radio programs in news, entertainment,
sports, finance, music. It also produces TV series, documentaries
and cartoons. SMG is building up its data bank with copyrighted
contents. It aims to become a major producer, distributor and supplier
serving the Chinese-speaking communities worldwide.
